Some facts and trivia about Lucy Lawless

Here are some facts and trivia about Lucy Lawless, my star of the month. Facts provided by IMDB.

Born: Lucille Francis Ryan

March 29, 1968 (2 days and 2 years before me..sweet) in Mount Albert, Auckland, New Zealand

Married to producer Robert Tapert since 1998.

First marriage was to Garth Lawless (1988-1995)

Has three children: two sons - Julius and Judah; one daughter - Daisy

 Lucy as Xena

Most known roles: Xena; Battlestar Galactica; Spartacus

Speaks German, French, some Italian.

Is a natural ash blonde before coloring her hair black for the role of "Xena".

Awarded the New Zealand Order Of Merit (NZOM), Queen's Birthday Honours 2004, for services to NZ entertainment and the community.

Lucy as D'Anna Biers (Battlestar Galactica)

Member of the Starship Foundation board of trustees since 2000. Starship is NZ's main children's hospital.

2006 saw Lucy make her singing debut on the TV Show Celebrity Duets and followed that up with sold out concerts in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago and London during 2007-2009. She has also performed at various benefits and most recently at the 2009 Planet A Concert in her native New Zealand.

A vocal supporter of gay rights, Lawless is considered something of a gay icon. After the cancellation of Xena: Warrior Princess (1995), Lawless has said she considered her character a lesbian. Since that time the actress has also worked to support equal protections for gay and lesbian couples including protesting Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian couples of the right to wed in California.
 Lucy as Lucretia (Spartacus)

The dwarf planet Eris was originally informally named Xena, with its moon nicknamed Gabrielle (after Xena's sidekick). The official names, Eris and Dysnomia, refer to Greek goddesses associated with lawlessness, another wink to Lucy Lawless.

Star of the Month Rose Byrne is terrific in the super creepy INSIDIOUS...

Star of the month Rose Bryne is terrific in the creepy thriller, Insidious. She and Patrick Wilson play husband and wife with three children who move into a new house. Once their eldest child goes into a coma and the doctors find nothing medically wrong with him, Renai (Rose's character) starts seeing things and think the house is possessed. So they move yet again but still can't shake these apparitions.
But when Josh (Patrick Wilson) mother shows up, they realize it isn't the house that is possessed, but their son. They call in Elise (played by Lin Shaye) who has had dealings with this short of thing as she and her two man crew attempt to bring the couple's son back from the dreamworld called The Further. It's a place where restless spirits dwell, and who will do anything to get back to the real world. And the young boy becomes a link from their world to the real world.

Renai and Josh looking suitably worried...

Insidious is one seriously twisted movie. And it is very creepy. The music alone will send shivers down your spine. The spirits are freaky looking and will scare you a few times. The cast is perfect especially Rose Byrne and Lin Shaye. Byrne is perfect as the distraught housewife who believes instantly about evil spirits and the Further. Her husband, not so much. And Lin Shaye is very effective as the spirit buster. This film really surprised me and it ends with a cliff-hanger. So I wouldn't be surprised if a sequel comes out very soon.
B
Elise: It's not the house that's haunted. It's your son!

Elise and Specs ready to do some spirit busting.....

A couple of spirits who look all innocent and nice...but are not

Freaky looking thing..ain't she?

Oh Elise don't mess around when it comes to dealing with evil spirits...IT'S ON!

Renai trying to explain that she has been seeing some weird things...

Last month, my star of the month was Diane Kruger. This month it's Diane's co-star from Troy and Wicker Park, Rose Byrne. The Australian actress has had one heck of a year in 2011 with three big hits: the thriller Insidious, the unexpected comedy smash Bridesmaids and X-Men: First Class. I will post pics and facts and reviews of her films all month long. Maybe my good friend Irene will lend a hand as well.

Happy Birthday Diane Kruger and Happy 200th post for me! A Double Celebration!

The timing couldn't have been better as my star of the month, Diane Kruger celebrates her birthday today and I hit my 200th post on here. Wow! I couldn't have planned it any better. Here are some pics of the lovely Ms. Kruger in honor of her birthday. One of the best exports Germany ever had. Plus she was in Quentin Tarantino's last film, Inglorious Bastereds.

I actually love this pic the most because Diane is looking so serene,  a little sad but still nice...

Some facts about star of the month DIANE KRUGER

Diane Kruger was born Diane Heidkrüger in Algermissen, near Hildesheim, Germany on July 15th, 1976. Yes her birthday is this month, so expect a little celebration here on Hero Worship. It's the least I can do for Diane. She studied ballet with the Royal Ballet in London before an injury ended her career. She returned to Germany and became a top fashion model. STAR OF THE MONTH: DIANE KRUGER

I just recently watched the new film Unknown with Liam Neeson. His co-stars included January Jones and Diane Kruger. Diane has been a favorite of mine ever since I first saw her as Helen in 2004's Troy. She will be the star of month for July and I will post facts, pics, and reviews of her. And it works out perfectly because the German born star has a birthday this month as well. And one of my friends hails from Germany and we have been discussing Diane quite a bit. Well me more than her, but still. So if you're a fan of Ms. Kruger please do stop by Hero Worship to join in on the festivities.

Star of the Month - Marina Sirtis

The star of the month is Star Trek veteran Marina Sirtis. The actress portrayed counselor Deanna Troi on Star Trek The Next Generation for 7 seasons on TV and 4 feature films. She was born to Greek parents who didn't want her to become an actress. As soon as Marina completed high school, she applied to the Guild Hall School of Music and Drama secretly. After her graduation, she worked in musical theater, repertory, and television. In 1986, she moved to Los Angeles, California. For six months she auditioned for parts but was unsuccessful. Just before she planned to go back home, she got the part of Counselor Deanna Troi in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987). In 1992 she married Michael Lamper, a rock guitarist. This bio info provided by Patrick Ceuppens on IMDB.

For the most part Star Trek is where I have seen Marina the most. She has appeared in other sci-fi films and guest appearances on other TV series, but Star Trek is definitely her bread and butter. And while many fans thought her character was kind of iffy, she was my 3rd favorite, behind only Captain Picard and Worf. Marina will be celebrating her 56th birthday on March 29th, two days before my birthday. She looks great and I for one would love to see the Next Generation gang get back together for one more adventure. She has been acting for over 30 years and I hope that more fans learn more about her.

For the month of November, in anticipation of the first part of the final Harry Potter film, The Deathly Hallows, Harry and company will be the stars of the month. Harry Potter is one of my favorite film series. I can't wait to see the final 2 parts. So I will review all previous films and posts pics and facts about the series all month long. And the usual reviews and photos of other movies, tv series, comics, etc. Let the magic begin.

Star of The Month: Milla Jovovich

She was born Milica Natasha Jovovich on December 17, 1975, in Kiev, Ukraine, Soviet Union (now Kiev, Ukraine). Her Serbian father, Bogdan Jovovich, was a medical doctor in Kiev. There he met her mother Galina Jovovich, a Russian actress. At the age of 5, in 1981, Milla with her parents emigrated from the Soviet Union, moving first to London, UK, then to Sacramento, California, and eventually settled in Los Angeles. There her parents worked as house-cleaners for the household of director Brian De Palma. Her parents separated, and eventually divorced, because her father was arrested and spent several years in prison.

Young Milla Jovovich was brought up by her single mother in Los Angeles. In addition to her native Russian, she also speaks Serbian and English. However, in spite of her cosmopolitan background, Milla was ostracized by some of her classmates, as a kid who emigrated from the Soviet Union amidst the paranoia of the Cold War. Many emotional scars had affected her behavior, but she eventually emerged as a resilient, multi-talented, albeit rebellious and risk-taking girl. She was coached by her actress mother since her childhood, first at home, then studied music, ballet, and acting in Los Angeles. In 1994 she appeared on the cover of 'High Times' in the UK, at the age of 18.

She shot to international fame after she was spotted by the photographer Richard Avedon at the age of 11, and was featured in Revlon's "Most Unforgettable Women in the World" advertisements, and on the cover of the Italian fashion magazine 'Lei' which was her first cover shoot. She made her first professional model contract at the age of 12, and soon made it to the cover of 'The Face', 'Vogue', 'Cosmopolitan' and many other magazines. The total number of her magazine covers worldwide was over one hundred by 2004, and keeps counting. In 2004 she made $10.4 million, becoming the highest paid supermodel in the world.

Milla Jovovich was torn between two professions, before she eventually became one of the very few supermodels who also developed a steady and serious film career. In 1988, at age 12, she made her film debut credited as Milla in a supporting role in Two Moon Junction (1988) by writer/director Zalman King. During the 1980s and early 1990s, she played several supporting roles as a teenage actress in film and on television, then starred in Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991). In 1997 she co-starred opposite Bruce Willis in the sci-if blockbuster The Fifth Element (1997), then she starred as the title character of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999). In the early 2000s, Milla had a few years of uncertainty in her acting career due to uneven quality of her films, as well as some hectic events in her private life. However, she managed to overcome her personal crisis. With the leading role as Alice in Resident Evil (2002) and its two sequels, she established herself as a film star, and her success in acting career eventually matched her success as a supermodel.

Outside of her acting and modeling professions, Milla Jovovich released several critically acclaimed musical recordings, making her debut as a singer, songwriter and musician with the 1994 release of 'The Divine Comedy'. She also gave several live performances with her band Plastic Has Memory and was featured on 'Hollywood Goes Wild'. Her vocal recordings appeared on soundtracks of several films. She has been writing music and lyrics to her song-demos, playing her guitar and sampling other sounds from her computer, and allowing free download and remix of her songs from her website.

For many years Milla Jovovich has been maintaining a healthier lifestyle, practicing yoga and meditation, trying to avoid junk food, and cooking for herself. Since she was a little girl, Milla has been writing a private diary, a habit she learned from her mother. She has been keeping a record of many good and bad facts of her life, her travels, her relationships, and all important ideas and events in her career, planning eventually to publish an autobiography. After dissolution of her two previous marriages, Milla Jovovich became engaged to film director Paul W.S. Anderson; their daughter, Ever Anderson, was born on November 3, 2007.

Lynda Carter as Rita Hayworth

Another role that Lynda did to further remove her from her Wonder Woman image was the 1983 movie, Rita Hayworth: The Love Goddess. And while I'm a little fuzzy on the details since I haven't seen it since 1983 or 1984, when it was last shown on TV, I do remember Lynda giving a pretty good performance. I know a lot of Rita fans in retrospect take offense that Carter was chosen to play the actress. But Lynda was a capable enough actress and she has never received much credit for her ability. Even when playing Wonder Woman, she was able to combine drama and comedy pretty well and not come off as cheesy. So I have no problem with Lynda playing the role of Rita Hayworth. It doesn't air on TV much and I don't think it's available on DVD as of yet, but far as film bios go, it's a solid one with a good performance by Lynda.

Lynda Carter in Partners In Crime (1984)

There are lots of people who only know Lynda from Wonder Woman. Well she did several other things as well. Not as successful as her stint as WW but still diverting and entertaining stuff. One such thing was the short-lived TV series Partners In Crime from 1984, which paired her up with Loni Anderson as women who were both married to the same man, a private detective, at different times. Lynda played Carole Stanwyck, a former socialite, now photographer. And Loni played Syndey Kovak, a pick pocket and jazz bass player. When their ex-husband is killed, they team up to find the killer after inheriting his private detective business. Once they solve the case they decide to stick together and solve crimes for a living. Partners in Crime lasted only one season but it was entertaining enough. Lynda and Loni made a great team, and there wasn't that many action adventure shows with two female leads, other than Cagney & Lacey. So Lynda's performance as Carole was a little different from her Wonder Woman role but she still got to drop some one liners and kick some ass.

Star Of The Month: Robert Downey, Jr.

To kick a new monthly feature here on Hero Worship, I chose Robert Downey Jr as the first actor to have this honor. Similar to what I do on my classic movies blog All Good Things which focus on classic movie goddesses. Here I will focus on the current generation of actors and actresses. My other choices for the rest of the year will include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, Lucy Lawless to name just a few.

Robert John Downey Jr. was born in Greenwich Village, New York City, at 1:10 pm. He's the son of underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr.. His first part in a movie was in his father's Pound (1970), in which 5-year-old Downey played a puppy. When he was 20 years old, he joined _Saturday Night Live_ (1985) for one season. After that, he went to Hollywood. In 1987, he got the leading role in director James Toback's film The Pick-up Artist (1987), co-starring with Molly Ringwald. The same year, he played drug addict Julian Wells in the movie Less Than Zero (1987). In 1992, he played Charles Chaplin in Sir Richard Attenborough's film Chaplin (1992). For his astonishing performance, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In the year 2000, he guest-starred in the comedy series "Ally McBeal" (1997), where he portrayed the attorney Larry Paul, who became Ally's love interest. For that performance, he won the Golden Globe for "best supporting actor in a comedy series." On "Ally McBeal" (1997), Downey got to show that he can sing as well as act, when he sang Joni Mitchell's "River," "Chances Are" as a duet with Vonda Shepard, and "Every Breath You Take" together with Sting. He released one song of his own, "Snakes," on the "Ally McBeal" (1997) album "For Once in My Life," and a full album of his own work entitled "The Futurist" in 2005. Robert has had a huge resurgence in film and 2008 was a banner year. First he played Tony Stark in the super-hero flick Iron Man, which became Downey's biggest hit ever at over $500 million at the worldwide box-office. Then he followed that with a hilarious role in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, which landed him another Oscar nod. He continued his hot streak in 2009 with a new take on the Sherlock Holmes legend. And 2010 should yield his biggest hit yet with the sequel Iron Man 2 due in May. Not bad for a guy whose career had hit rock bottom thanks to drugs back in the 90's. It's good to see Robert doing so well.

I will post facts and trivia and reviews about Robert Downey Jr. all month long.
