Attack The Block (2011) is a B movie delight!

Finally caught this buzzed about little film from last year on cable last night. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Set in South London, this film has a bunch of teens who must thwart an alien invasion in their own neighborhood. Led by the enigmatic Moses (a terrific turn by John Boyega, who will remind you of a young Denzel Washington), this band of reckless youths are a harmless lot. Sure they rob some people and commit a little vandalism, but nothing extreme. Until one night they cross paths with a young woman named Sam (played by Jodie Whittaker) who is a nurse and happens to live in the same apartment complex as the boys, unbeknownst to them. Well they mug her one night just as a blazing object falls from the sky and smashes a car. They investigate and it's a little alien creature who attacks Moses. The gang gives chase and ends up killing the creature, but this is only the beginning as much bigger aliens start falling from the sky. And guess what, they target Moses and his friends, looking for a little payback. Well these boys don't back down without a fight as they grab their weapons of choice, which range from a baseball bat to a cool stash of powerful fireworks to a freakin awesome samurai sword. Things get bloody and action packed as the movie goes along with Moses becoming one bad ass hero. Also plenty of humor, especially coming from the character called Pest. Filmed on a very low budget, what the film lacks in visual flair, more than makes up for in interesting characters and inventive action scenes. Not too many people know about this film, including myself until watching it last night. I was highly entertained for 85 minutes. From the producers of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim and co-starring Nick Frost, you have to check out this cool movie. Oh and one more thing, the whole cast speaks in a very thick British accent, but I understood them perfectly.

31 Days Of Horror: Day 30 (ALIENS - 1986)

Terrific sequel that is the perfect follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1979 original Alien. This time James Cameron (The Terminator) takes over and creates one of the best films ever made. Set 57 years after the events of the first film, sole survivor Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver's best performance ever) is picked up floating adrift in space in suspended animation. She is taken back to Earth and has to explain what happened to her crew-mates and the very expensive ship that she blew up. Of course no one believes her story of an alien that killed her mates and almost got her too. And the planet where they picked up the creature is now populated by engineers and their families. But suddenly when all communication is lost, a team of US Colonial Marines are dispatched to investigate. Ripley reluctantly goes along as an advisor. The setup is perfect and soon the marines are under full assault by a planet full of aliens. There is only one survivor there on the planet, a little girl named Newt, who quickly bonds with Ripley. The action scenes are impressive, some of the best you will ever see. With a strong cast alongside Weaver that includes Michael Biehn as Corporal Hicks, Bill Paxton as the hilarious Hudson, Lance Henriksen as the android Bishop, Paul Reiser as slimy company man Drake, and of course Jenette Goldstein as Vasquez. Director James Cameron manages to top the original Alien with this well crafted story driven sci-fi action/horror film. One of my favorite films of all time.

Awesome Movie Weapons - M41 Pulse Rifle (Aliens)

Probably one of my most favorite movie weapons is the M41 Pulse Rifle used by the Colonial Marines in James Cameron sci-fi epic Aliens. The pulse rifles were created from a Thompson SMG, with an attached forend of a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun and a Remington 12 Gauge Model 870P receiver with barrel. It's an awesome weapon and yet to be surpassed in terms of use on film. It sounds and looks cool. And gets a lot of screen time. The M41 Pulse rifle is THE weapon. Check out the trailer for some of it's cool usage.
